Progress Conference
Rachel spoke at the Progress conference on Saturday about securing the economic recovery, and the need to ensure a more diverse, less vulnerable economy that secures jobs for the future. While she agreed that the reduction of the budget deficit must be a priority, she said that this must not come at the cost of embedding the fragile recovery that Labour had secured. She talked about the risks of the new Coalition government cutting too hard, too fast, and the dangerous possibility of a ‘double dip’ recession as a result. Rachel was speaking alongside Yvette Cooper, Shadow Minister for Work and Pensions. Also speaking at the conference were some of the candidates for the Labour leadership, including David Miliband, Ed Miliband and Andy Burnham.
